Charlie still doesn't have a favourite. She'd argue that's the entire point.

I bought it expecting to have a favourite. What I got instead was the quiet realisation that which turns out to be the whole point.

read

I bought it expecting to have a favourite. The way you buy a set of anything assuming one will rise to the top and the rest will sit in the drawer being decent. That is not what happened.

What happened is that I kept reaching for a different one depending on the evening, and after a while I stopped pretending there was a correct answer. Some nights you want the small insistent one. Some nights you don't, and you'd be cross if anyone suggested you should. The set doesn't ask you to decide who you are first. It offers, and it waits, and it doesn't take it personally when you change your mind.

Margaret, who is seventy-four and has opinions about everything including this, said the trouble with most things sold to women our age is that they arrive with instructions for how you're supposed to feel about them. She is right, as she usually is, and as she is usually pleased to be told.

The verdict. A set that doesn't tell you what to feel. Four sleeves, one core, ten patterns, and not a single instruction about which evening is the right evening. Versatility isn't a feature you use up. It's permission you keep.

"

The right thing on a given evening is whichever one you reach for. Nobody — not Margaret, not the spreadsheet, not me — gets to tell you that you reached wrong.

What it actually does — four shapes, one core, no instructions

Four sleeves. One core.
Ten patterns between them.
No instructions for how you're meant to feel about any of it.

The twist sleeve — fluted, textured
01

The twist.

Fluted, slow, textured. The one I reach for without deciding to.

The beads sleeve — graduated
02

The beads.

Graduated and deliberate. Patient. Doesn't rush you anywhere.

The tulip sleeve — broad and soft
03

The tulip.

Broad and soft. Gentler than it looks — most things are.

The diamond sleeve — cross-hatched
04

The diamond.

Defined, present, cross-hatched. For evenings with an opinion.

The Multi-Mini But Mighty, water still life
The Multi-Mini But Mighty — the tulip sleeve, detail

"It goes in the bath. I checked. Repeatedly, in the name of research."

The receipt

Bought separately — and people do buy these separately — four shapes and a core run you the wrong side of a hundred and seventy pounds. This is a hundred and twenty-five. I'm not telling you to buy things because the arithmetic is flattering. I'm telling you the arithmetic, in this case, was flattering.

Charlie's reluctant conclusion

Permission
you keep on
the shelf.

What I came round to is that versatility isn't a thing you exhaust. It's permission you keep on the shelf.

I still don't have a favourite. I've stopped looking for one. The right thing on a given evening is whichever one I reach for, and the older I get the less interested I am in being told I reached wrong. Margaret would say that's the whole of it. Margaret would, on this occasion, be right.
